Darkness Abound Available Now

Christmas is almost here, so get yourself or the horror/dark fiction fan in your life the gift of this little anthology of dark tales from Migla Press. I have the great fortune to have my western revenge fable "A Noose of Barbed Wire" included, which introduces my character Mordecai Jefferson to the world. As you can tell by the title, it's not a exactly a story brimming with Christmas cheer - this is in fact possibly the meanest story I've yet written - but it's a bleak little ditty that more than lives up to the anthology's title.

You can pick up your copy in print or digital right here. Merry Christmas!

Tales of the Shadowmen 12 Now Available

One of the great pleasures of my life has been going from 'reader' to 'contributor' to the annual Tales of the Shadowmen anthology series from Black Coat Press, a tradition I'm glad to see continue for this twelfth volume, entitled Carte Blanche. For those not in the know, TOTS features a host of stories mashing up various characters from pulp fiction and beyond, in the grand tradition of Phil Farmer's Wold Newton universe or Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, with a specific focus on French heroes and villains. New and returning authors alike contribute stories of old stand-bys and other characters making their Shadowmen debut, and it's always a good bit of fun for all involved. My story this outing is "House of El Hombre Loco," a love-letter to the B-monster and horror movies of the mid-century and beyond, and stars Count Waldemar Daninsky, the main character of the wonderfully weird El Hombre Lobo series of films featuring the incomparable Paul Naschy. More than one monster makes an appearance, but you'll have to pick up a copy of your own to find out who made the cut! The volume should be available from all the usual suspects (Amazon, Barnes & Noble), but BCP is currently hosting a holiday sale, so now would be the perfect time to order directly from them!

Halloween Returns: A Fan-Fiction Anthology Availble Now for FREE!

So, I'm a little late to the party on this one, being that Halloween came and went exactly four days ago, but that's largely because I just found out about it: I have a story included in the recent "Halloween Returns: A Fan Fiction Anthology," from the fine folks at Horror Novel Reviews. What is this anthology all about, you may be asking yourself? Well, it's right there in the title, but just in case you need it to be further spelled out, Halloween Returns highlights none other than what is possibly the greatest horror franchise of all-time, the Halloween series, starring everyone's favorite masked killer, Michael Myers. There are 19 tales in all, including my own "Helloween," a short little ditty that attempts to explain just how it is that Myers has survived countless stabbings, shootings and other things that would kill any other mortal throughout his near thirty-year career. The best thing about this anthology is that it is 100% FREE (being that it's not licensed from the original rights holders), and you can download your copy today HERE as an .epub, .mobi or .pdf file. I don't think you'll regret it!

Fictionvale Episode 6: Pick Your Punk

So today's a real good news/bad news situation. The good news is that Episode 6 of Fictionvale Magazine, featuring my story "Ironblood: A Fairypunk Adventure," is finally available for your reading pleasure. The bad news is that this will be the last episode of Fictionvale.

But, if you're going to go out, you might as well go out swinging, and this last issue promises to be a whopper of a good time. The theme this go-round is "Pick Your Punk," offering ten genre stories encompassing the various "-punk" sub-genres. All are on display: steampunk, cyberpunk, dieselpunk and my own fairypunk. It's a host of amazing stories by a host of amazing writers, and the story of mine included - featuring twenty-five-foot tall mechs fighting fire-breathing dragons - is one I'm tremendously proud to have included amongst the rest.

You can pick up your copy (available as a downloadable package of .pdf, .epub and .mobi versions) right here.

Beyond Order & Chaos Contest

So. I've recently put up my novel Beyond Order & Chaos up on Inkshares. To help promote it, I think it's time for a little fun: design-a-BOC-character-contest fun. That's right... I want you to pick a character from Beyond Order & Chaos and send in what you think they should look like, and if I like yours the best, you'll get a $10 Amazon gift card! Here's how you enter:

1. Read the sample at the link here, pick a character or characters from it and whip up a spiffy design. A b&w sketch, a full-color image, cosplay if you want to go real crazy... all will be considered!

2. Send your design via attachment (jpegs would be preferable, but any format works) to beyondorderandchaos@gmail.com with the subject heading "Character Design Contest." Make sure you include the name of the character(s) in the body of the e-mail, so I'll know who you've designed. NOTE: must be a character from Beyond Order & Chaos  to qualify.

I'll be taking submissions until Sept. 23, after which I'll choose my favorite and post it here and at the Inkshares page for all to see. If I get more than one that I like, I may post those, too, but only one winner will get the $10 Amazon gift card. There will be a winner no matter what - if I get only one qualified submission, then that submission will get the gift card - so you might as well toss the dice against the wall and send me what you've got!

             Thank you, and good luck!

Beyond Order & Chaos is up on Inkshares

So, I've decided to give this Inkshares thing a go, as my novel Beyond Order & Chaos is up and ready to be pre-ordered!

The novel tells an interactive, branching story similar to the old Choose Your Own Adventure books, in which the superhero Light loses his powers in a final battle with his arch-nemesis at the mention of a single word. Of course, this leads him down further adventures in which the reader controls the story, spanning pretty much the whole length of an entire universe of gods, monsters and maybe one or two kitchen sinks along the way. I've always felt that superheroes where at their best when they were allowed to explore every corner of the weird, genre-bending universes they inhabit, and so I attempted to pack that same level of detail into the one Light traverses throughout the course of the story(s).

If that sounds like something that would interest you, do me a favor and click on over to the link below and give it a look. There's a small sample of the book and also a video I put together (that hopefully won't make me cringe in the future) showing off the many wild directions the story can take:

The Vampire Almanac, Vol. 1 is Available NOW!

The wonderful folks at Black Coat Press have just released another fine collection of Wold Newtonian goodness, and I am once again honored and excited to have a story included in their latest volume, The Vampire Almanac, Vol. 1. As you can likely guess, this collection is all about those children of the night and the particular brand of music they make, featuring fictional vampires both famous and obscure. My story, entitled "Schrodinger's Blood," sees the mystic Sar Dubnotal offering his services to a man plagued by a peculiar condition: his blood is seemingly both flowing through his veins, and not there at all, leaving his life in a precarious state. The story also has ties to Etienne-Leon de Lamothe-Langon's haunting novel The Virgin Vampire, and it's spectral, titular vampire Alinska. The "Schrodinger's Cat" thought-experiment is something that's always fascinated me, and one I've always found rife with narrative potential. I had a great deal of fun playing around with those ideas here, and hope it stands up to the other fine vampire tales found within this tome, which is the first of two scheduled volumes.

You can pick up your copy today here, here and here.
